Context

YARRA Wine & Food sits on rue Notre-Dame, in the Chartrons. The name comes from the Australian Yarra Valley, and the house is run by Albane Brumont and Aaron Skovell, who handles the kitchen. A long counter, exposed stone, a bottle wall in the room and a planted patio, more than two hundred and fifty references on the list, and a place on the Star Wine List.

Challenge

This is not a reportage, it is an upkeep. A house that publishes all year needs new images at regular intervals, and the trap is that they end up looking alike. The constraint is therefore not technical but cumulative: every new series has to add to the previous ones without repeating them, on the same walls and the same counter.

Approach

The series followed the pace of the house rather than a schedule: a first invoice in April 2024, photographs and video in June 2024, a series shot for the venue’s anniversary in March 2025, then plates in September 2025. No formal brief was ever written, and that is what made it possible to work inside the service rather than beside it. The setting changes role each time: the stone, the wooden shutters, the counter, the bottle wall. Plates are photographed as they leave the pass, which rules out recomposing them.

Deliverables

Successive photo series, plus video on the June 2024 set. Square and vertical frames are made in camera, at the format the house publishes.

Usage rights

The exact scope of the licence is not restated here: it belongs to each series. Releases are on file for everyone appearing in frame.

Outcome

The collaboration has run since 2024 and renews itself series after series, with no pitch and no brief. The company is active and filed its accounts in August 2026. See also the food photography pillar.

Two hands setting down an oval metal dish, tomato gratin and melted cheese studded with green olives.
The dish arrives at the table, still bubbling. Photographed as it is set down, not once it has cooled.
Hollandaise poured from a spoon over scrambled eggs, toast, avocado, salmon and lemon.
Brunch. The sauce is poured once only: the ribbon has to be right first time or the plate is lost.
Plate of three sesame buns filled with pulled meat and red cabbage, held in front of wooden shutters.
Held out at arm’s length in front of the shutters: the background belongs to the room, never brought in from a studio.
Champagne bottle held in the hand above a dark timber counter, dark green and ochre label.
A bottle from the list, held rather than set down. The house carries more than two hundred and fifty references.
Bearded man in an apron at a professional coffee grinder, hopper full of beans, dark green curtain behind.
At the grinder. The square is the format the house publishes, so the frame is made square in camera.
