Hotel and riad photographer in Marrakech
I photographed La Sultana, a set of restored riads in the heart of the Kasbah, during a stay in the winter of 2025-2026. One property, but the whole of it: patios, rooms, salons, pool, service and food. The project page is published on this site.

A riad is not photographed like a hotel
A hotel has a façade, an entrance and a lobby you can show. A riad closes on itself: there is nothing to photograph from the street, and light only enters through the patio, which means vertically and for a few hours. The salons are dark by design, the walls are carved, and neither stucco nor marquetry returns anything under frontal light.
What works is looking for the angle where light arrives from the side rather than adding a source, and going up: the upper galleries are the only viewpoint that shows the plan of a patio. From the ground floor you photograph a wall. The La Sultana project page sets out the choices space by space.
The medina sets the production constraints
In the listed medina you do not move by vehicle. Everything that enters the riad enters on foot, through lanes where two people pass with difficulty. That rules out heavy lighting from the start, and pushes you to work with what the house already contains.
At La Sultana it was the service uniforms that supplied the backgrounds: an embroidered red kaftan for the carried dishes, a red cape in a carved timber corridor, a navy jacket for the glass presented in two hands. No background was set up. The decor of a riad is strong enough that anything added shows immediately.
Twenty-eight rooms, all different
This is the most underestimated constraint in boutique hospitality. In a standardised property, one typical room stands for the category. Here every room has its own bed, its own panelling, its own light, and one image cannot represent another without misleading the guest who books.
So you either cover exhaustively, which changes the number of days, or you accept showing a sample and say so. That is a production decision rather than a photographic one, and it is settled on the quote rather than on site. The same reasoning applies to any independent property: see the hospitality pillar.
The pool, the food, and the rest of the house
A pool framed by arcades is photographed twice rather than once: in full sun through the palm fronds, when the date palm gives the arcades their scale, and in shade at the end of the day, when still water returns the whole wall. These are two very different images of the same place, and a property needs both.
On the table side, La Sultana runs a fine-dining restaurant, two rooftops, and on Sundays receives seafood platters from La Sultana Oualidia. Food work follows the same rules as anywhere, with one nuance: the decor is so rich that a wide frame works against the plate. You tighten, and let the place return on the ambience frames.
The frame of this production, stated plainly
This series was not quoted for. It was a collaboration: a stay, and images. I mention it because a photographer’s site that presents a collaboration as a commission manufactures a credential it does not have, and because the frame changes what can be stated about the licence granted.
For a commission in Marrakech the process is that of any hospitality production: a quote with days, deliverables and intended use, a scout, the shoot, delivery by share link. Travel appears on the quote.
A set of riads, photographed whole
La Sultana occupies several restored riads on rue de la Kasbah, inside the listed medina. Twenty-eight rooms all different, two rooftops, a pink marble spa. The project page gives the real constraints, how the interiors were handled on available light, and the property’s reply on receiving the images.
What clients say
Reviews published on Ahoueke Hilaire’s Google listing, reproduced here word for word.
Frequently asked questions
Do you light riad interiors?
- As little as possible, and never frontally. Carved stucco and marquetry only give up their relief when light arrives from the side: finding the right angle beats adding a source, and the medina makes moving heavy lighting difficult anyway.
How many days for a riad of twenty-eight rooms?
- It depends on what you want covered. If every room needs its own images, allow generously: they are not interchangeable. If a sample is enough for the website and the platforms, two to three days cover the public spaces, the pool, the service and a few rooms.
Do you photograph the food as well?
- Yes. Dishes, service and bar are part of the same production, and they are usually what properties of this type lack most. The [food pillar](/en/food-photography/) describes the method.
Do you work elsewhere in Morocco?
- I travel, but I only open a page on this site for a city where I have actually worked. Marrakech is one. For another destination, write to me directly rather than looking for a page that does not exist.
