Le Diamono, the Terrou-Bi listening bar: three days of content creation in Dakar

Le Diamono is the listening bar of Hôtel Terrou-Bi in Dakar: turntables, a wall of vinyl, a list of about a dozen signatures and a terrace open onto the marina. The property’s second commission after the February 2025 reportage, shot on 10, 11 and 12 April.

Context

Le Diamono is a hi-fi bar in the sense of the Japanese kissa: the record comes before the drink. The programming runs from soul to jazz, from afro-funk to reggae, on Harbeth speakers and Rotel amplification, and the list holds about a dozen signatures, with and without alcohol, built around West African spices. The venue pairs a room of pale timber, black marble and leather with a terrace open onto the hotel marina. After the February reportage, the property issued a purchase order in early April 2025 for content creation at the bar.

Challenge

Photographing a listening bar poses a simple problem: what makes the place cannot be seen. Sound does not photograph, and a frame that shows only bottles could have been taken anywhere. A lighting problem came with it: the room is deliberately dark, held together by table lamps, lit bottle niches and a strip under the banquette, all at different colour temperatures. Adding a source would have erased the very thing worth photographing. Last came a calendar constraint: the content had to feed a publication schedule the property had already set, which fixed the output formats before the first frame.

Approach

The scout on 9 April was there to settle the hours. The bar opens in the late afternoon: the exteriors and the terrace are shot before, in daylight and under the striped shadow of the pergola, and the room and the service afterwards, on the venue’s own light alone. Nothing was added indoors, which means composing with the existing masses of light — the bottle wall, the strip under the banquette — and treating them as framing elements rather than as faults. The wall of vinyl became the way to show what sound cannot show: the record being pulled, the hand that chooses it. The property’s team supplied its communication material and its publication schedule, which made it possible to shoot each scene straight into the expected format rather than crop for it afterwards.

Deliverables

A photo selection and a set of videos, delivered vertical for the property’s social channels and horizontal for its website. The room, the counter, the cocktails, the bar snacks and the terrace are treated as five separate subjects.

Usage rights

The images are made for the property’s website and social channels. Releases are on file for everyone appearing in frame.

Outcome

The property approved a third commission on 5 November 2025, for a photo and video production at Le Diamono in December. In 2026 the bar was placed in the Middle East and Africa Top 10 of the Spirited Awards, in the Best New International Cocktail Bar category. See also the food photographer in Dakar page.

Excessive drinking is harmful to health. Please drink responsibly.

Bar room in pale timber, olive velvet banquette, tan leather armchairs and a lit black marble counter.
The room before service. Everything visible here lights the room: the table lamps, the bottle niches, the strip at floor level. No source was added.
Tall pink cocktail, spiced rim and a grapefruit wedge, set on the black marble counter.
A long drink on the edge of the counter. Behind it, the fluted timber band and its warm strip, the only setting in the frame.
Bartender in black measuring a pour into a jigger, lit vinyl shelves and a speaker behind him.
Measuring, at the station. Behind, the vinyl crates and the speaker: that is what makes this a listening bar and not a hotel bar.
Two hands pulling a record from its crate on the timber shelf, another LP filed right beside it.
The record being chosen. Photographing a listening bar comes down to this gesture: sound cannot be seen, the selection can.
Bartender in a leather apron stirring at the counter, a lit bottle wall behind and two stools in front.
The bottle wall is the only mass of light in the room: the frame is built so it carries the background without crushing the figure.
Hand stirring a tall pink drink with a spiced rim, jigger set beside it on the counter.
The same glass, at the build. The spoon stays sharp because the gesture is repeated at the bartender’s pace, not the camera’s.
Hand setting a yellow and red layered glass on a napkin, black marble counter and steel rail.
The drink served. The gradient holds for a few seconds only: the image decides the moment, not the other way round.
Pale green coupe, apple and carrot garnish on a pick, on black marble in front of a green leather chair.
A signature from the list. The green leather chair gives the background, the marble table gives the reflection, nothing is brought in.
Yellow coupe with a spiced rim set on a stack of African art books, against a timber panel.
The house books are on African textiles, photography and cinema. They make the plinth for the glass, and they say where we are.
Short glass with rosemary on a pale marble table, between two grey houndstooth armchairs.
The light corner of the room. The two armchairs frame the glass: the subject is small, the composition does the rest.
Tan leather banquette, marble coffee table on rough stone legs, a tray with an amber glass and ice.
The coffee table and its service tray. The light strip under the banquette was left on: it is what lifts the furniture off the floor.
Overhead view of a round black table covered with croquettes, arancini, tartlets, breadsticks and pomegranate dips.
The bar snacks, photographed from above. Black marble serves as the ground: it is the only surface in the house that returns no light.
Two teak and rope armchairs facing each other under the pergola, coconut palms and lagoon beyond the glazing.
The terrace, open onto the marina. The bar opens late in the day, but the exteriors are shot before, while the light is still readable.
Cane and teak armchairs on the terrace, a round stool, laden coconut palms and the turquoise marina water.
The same terrace vertical, the format the property publishes. The frame is made at that format, not cropped afterwards.
Short golden glass on a round table, teak armchair and the striped shadow of the pergola on the terrace floor.
The pergola slats stripe the floor in the late afternoon. The shadow is as much the subject as the glass.
A woman works on her laptop in a cane armchair facing the lagoon, coconut palms and a woven mat underfoot.
The terrace before service, when it works as a lounge. It is the only frame in the set where nobody is drinking.
